Every December, the Sault Ste. Marie Malayalee Association transforms a cold Canadian evening into a warm celebration of tradition, friendship and joy. Our annual Christmas & New Year Gathering is more than a party – it’s a chance for Malayalees and friends from across the city to come together, share in the holiday spirit and welcome the New Year as one community.
As guests arrive, they are greeted by twinkling lights, festive decorations and the sound of Malayalam carols mixed with English classics. The highlight of the evening is our beautifully decorated Christmas tree, surrounded by gifts for the much-anticipated Secret Santa exchange. Families take photos, children run to meet friends, and the air buzzes with excitement.
Although we are thousands of kilometres away from Kerala, our celebration carries familiar flavours. Volunteers prepare a Kerala-style festive dinner featuring appam and stew, biryani, cutlets and payasam. For many newcomers and students, this event is a comforting reminder of home. In addition to food, our talented members perform carols, skits and dances that blend Western holiday themes with Malayalee culture.
The Secret Santa gift exchange has become a cherished tradition. Guests bring a wrapped gift within a set budget and leave it under the tree. When Santa (played by a volunteer in costume) arrives to distribute the gifts, the excitement is palpable – especially for children. There’s always laughter, surprise and a bit of good-natured mischief as people try to guess who their Secret Santa might be.
This gathering also serves a deeper purpose: strengthening our bonds as a community. It’s a chance for new families, students and long-time residents to meet, make friends and plan for the year ahead. Many volunteer sign-ups for future events happen right here, over cups of chai and slices of plum cake.
If you’d like to attend the next Christmas & New Year Gathering, make sure your SMA membership is up to date or register as a guest. RSVP early so we can plan seating and meals. Bring a Secret Santa gift if you’d like to join the exchange, and consider volunteering to perform or help with decorations – it’s a wonderful way to meet people and give back.
As the night ends with countdowns, hugs and selfies, we’re reminded of what makes the Sault Ste. Marie Malayalee Association special: our ability to keep our culture alive while embracing our Canadian home. We can’t wait to see you at next year’s celebration!
