Every spring, as nature wakes up after the long Canadian winter, the Sault Ste. Marie Malayalee Association marks the Malayalam New Year with a tradition that blends outdoor fun, culture and community: the Vishu Family Picnic. This event is our way of welcoming a new year of prosperity and togetherness while giving families a chance to relax and connect.

A Kerala Tradition in a Canadian Park

Vishu is one of Kerala’s most cherished festivals, symbolising hope and fresh beginnings. In Kerala, people wake up to the Vishu Kani – an auspicious arrangement of fruits, flowers and coins viewed at dawn. At our picnic, we recreate this beautiful tradition with a vibrant Vishu Kani display at the venue. Families stop by to take photos, explain its meaning to children, and start the day on an auspicious note.

Food, Fun and Friendship

A key highlight of the Vishu Family Picnic is the potluck-style feast. Members bring their favourite home-cooked Kerala dishes – everything from sambar and thoran to biryani and payasam – creating a colourful buffet that everyone enjoys. Eating under open skies with friends old and new makes the food taste even better.

The day is also packed with games for all ages. Children dash off to sack races, balloon tosses and treasure hunts, while adults get competitive over cricket, volleyball and tug-of-war. These simple games spark laughter, teamwork and nostalgia for similar gatherings back in Kerala.

Passing on Traditions to the Next Generation

One of the goals of the Vishu Family Picnic is to help our younger members connect with their roots. Volunteers explain the significance of Vishu, teach kids about the flowers and vegetables used in the Vishu Kani, and sometimes even organise a mini-workshop where children can try making simple flower arrangements or paint Vishu-themed cards.

More than Just a Picnic

While the picnic is a joyful day in itself, it also strengthens our community ties. Newcomers to Sault Ste. Marie find it a welcoming environment to meet other Malayalees, and long-time members get a chance to reconnect. Many families say it’s one of their favourite SMA events because it’s informal, outdoors and family-friendly.

How to Join Next Time

If you’d like to be part of our next Vishu Family Picnic, make sure your SMA membership is current or register as a guest. RSVP in advance and mention what dish you’ll bring so we can plan the buffet. Bring picnic mats, chairs, sports gear and plenty of enthusiasm for a day of fun.

Looking Forward

The Vishu Family Picnic reminds us that even far from Kerala, we can keep our traditions alive and thriving. It’s about starting the year with good food, good company and good memories – and we can’t wait to welcome you to the next one!
